What is ellaOne®?
ellaOne® (ulipristal acetate 30mg) is an emergency contraceptive pill, often called the “morning-after pill.” It is designed to help prevent pregnancy after unprotected sex or contraceptive failure.
It is the most effective oral emergency contraceptive available in the UK and can be taken up to 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
How it works:
ellaOne® works by temporarily delaying ovulation (the release of an egg from the ovary). If ovulation is delayed until sperm are no longer active in the body, fertilisation and pregnancy are prevented.
Usage:
-
Take one tablet (30mg) orally as soon as possible, ideally within 24 hours, and no later than 120 hours (5 days) after unprotected sex.
-
The tablet can be taken with or without food.
-
If you vomit within 3 hours of taking ellaOne®, another tablet may be needed.
-
ellaOne® is not intended as a regular contraceptive — it should only be used in emergencies.
-
A barrier or ongoing contraceptive method should be used after taking ellaOne®.
